Street Beat is one of three K-Tel pop music compilations released early in 1984, along with Sound System and Expressions. (The latter two should appear soon on K-Tel Kollection as today marks our expansion into the uncharted territory of 1984 and a name change for the blog to reflect the wider scope.)
There are a dozen tracks on Street Beat, which is sub-titled New Music—Hot Sounds. All but one of the tracks are extremely familiar to me, and not just because I spent all of last year (2018) trying in vain to write up and count down the 1983 Hideaway 200 before dumping the entire list in frustration, 5 songs at a time in 40 tweets over on the Twitter in the final week of the year just to be out from under the burden I placed myself in by tackling such a project. But I ain't bitter.
Street Beat is available on LP and cassette with identical track listings and running orders featuring the singles pictured below, not a bad one in the bunch.
Now that we know what's on the album, let's see if we can guess what the K-Tel Scale score will be as it is a good variety of music so I expect lots of crossover amongst our scoring charts. Looking at the titles here, I'm guessing maybe half of them made the Top 10 on the Pop chart with at least a couple of those being Number Ones for a score of 26.82. Let's punch it up and see what we get.
Five Top 10s and only one Number One song on the Billboard Pop chart (aka Hot 100) at least and the score is still somewhat higher than I projected. Every single track hit the top 40 and all but one record appeared on more than chart with all but two of the songs hitting the Disco/Dance chart. Ordinarily, 27.63 would be a respectable score on the K-Tel Scale but due to strong showings from the albums of 1975-1977, it is actually just below the average score of 28.21.
